A Fact of Life

At a recent campaign event in Arizona, Sen. JD Vance, the 2024 Republican vice presidential nominee, came under criticism for his remarks regarding a school shooting in Winder, Georgia.

Vanced claimed that school shootings are an unfortunate “fact of life,” as reported by OKMagazine.com. Vance has consistently opposed gun control measures as infringements on the Second Amendment.

“JD Vance responds to the deadly shooting in Georgia by saying school shootings are just ‘a fact of life’ and attacking common sense gun safety reform,” Kamala Harris’ campaign wrote.

The Reality We Live In
“I don’t like this, I don’t like to admit this, I don’t like that this is a fact of life,” Vance said. “I don’t want my kids to go to school in a place where they feel like you’ve got to have additional security, but that is increasingly the reality that we live in,” he added.
Security Measures
His remarks, which included a call for increased security measures in schools, drew criticism from elected officials, activists, and gun violence survivors, including Fred Guttenberg, a parent of a Parkland shooting victim.
A Daughter Murdered
“School shootings are a fact of life? My daughter Jaime’s murder was a fact of life?” Guttenberg wrote.
The Irony
Critics noted the irony of Vance speaking about school shootings while simultaneously standing behind bulletproof glass in a secure environment where firearms are prohibited.
Never Accepted
Many expressed that such violence should never be accepted as a norm, calling for significant changes in response to gun violence.
Major Change
“When shots were fired at Trump MAGA Republicans were furious… When shots are fired at students and teachers, MAGA Republicans: ‘it’s a fact of life’ and ‘We’ve got to deal with it,'” conservative Matt Walton wrote. “As a teacher I say this is [expletive] and it’s time for major change.”
